Byzantine Notation for Beginner and Intermediate Levels
*Byzantine Chant Camp 2018 dates: June 17 – 29
One of the most beautiful aspects of our Orthodox worship is the hymnography that is sung by chanters and choirs to lead the congregation in prayer.
Campers will focus on two tones throughout the session and will break off into beginner and intermediate levels with the chanting instructors. Campers will be introduced to Byzantine Notation, which is an ancient method for writing liturgical music and is still used today in Churches following the Byzantine tradition. Campers will learn the Greek scale (Ni, Pa, Vou, Gha, Dhi, Ke, Zo, Ni), how to read the music, and the theory behind it. Click here for more information on the history and development of Byzantine Chant. Campers will also have the opportunity to chant during daily services.
The Byzantine Chant Camp will have a maximum of 14 female campers and 14 male campers. Chanting campers will stay in cabins together according to age and participate in the regular summer camping program as normal, but will learn the art of Byzantine Chant during the time allotted for Morning Program.
